What is Thread Count & What is the Best Thread Count? featured image

What is Thread Count & What is the Best Thread Count?

When it comes to buying sheets, you’ve probably heard a lot about thread count. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter? Let’s break down the basics, clear up some common misconceptions, and help you find the perfect sheet set for your best night’s sleep.

What is Thread Count?

Thread count is simply the number of threads woven together in one square inch of fabric. It’s calculated by adding the number of horizontal threads (weft) and vertical threads (warp) together. For example, if a sheet has 200 threads running horizontally and 200 threads running vertically, it would have a thread count of 400.

But here’s the thing—higher thread count doesn’t always mean better quality. In fact, some brands use misleading tactics to inflate thread count numbers, which brings us to our next topic: multi-ply yarn.

What Is Multi-Ply Yarn? H2

Multi-ply yarn means that two or more strands of yarn are twisted together to form a single thread. Some manufacturers use this technique to artificially boost thread count by counting each ply of yarn separately. So, a sheet advertised with a 600-thread count may actually be made from 300 two-ply threads.

While multi-ply yarn can add durability, it doesn’t necessarily make sheets softer or more comfortable. In fact, single-ply yarn (one thread twisted together) tends to feel smoother and more breathable. So when you’re shopping for sheets, be cautious of super high thread counts that seem too good to be true. Chances are, it’s the result of multi-ply yarn, and you might not get the luxurious feel you expect.

When Thread Count Matters

Thread count is important, but it’s not the only factor that determines the quality of your sheets. If you’re choosing between two similar materials—let’s say 100% cotton—then thread count can give you a good idea of how the fabric will feel and wear over time.

Generally, sheets with a thread count between 300 and 500 offer a good balance of softness, durability, and breathability. Anything under 300 might feel too thin, while anything over 500 could be unnecessarily thick and stifling. So, for most people, sticking to this sweet spot will give you the best sleep experience.

Thread Count Differences by Fabric Types

While thread count often grabs attention, the type of fabric plays a key role in how comfortable and durable your sheets will be. High-quality fabrics like Egyptian cotton and Pima cotton feature long, durable fibers that provide softness and breathability even at moderate thread counts. For instance, a 300-thread count Egyptian cotton sheet will typically feel far more luxurious than a 600-thread count sheet made from lower-quality cotton. Similarly, bamboo sheets offer a naturally cool and silky feel, making even lower thread counts feel smooth and breathable. Linen, known for its texture and breathability, performs well even with thread counts under 200, becoming softer with each wash rather than relying on a high thread count for comfort.

In contrast, sheets made from lower-grade cotton or multi-ply yarn often use inflated thread counts to appear more premium than they are. This means that fabric quality should be your primary focus, as it has a bigger impact on the sheet’s overall performance. Prioritize materials like Egyptian cotton, bamboo, or linen, and then consider thread count as a secondary factor to ensure the best combination of comfort, durability, and breathability for your sleeping needs.

What is the best thread count for you?

Our recommendations for finding the best thread count for you are simple!

Here’s the key: everyone’s sleep preferences are different. Some people love the crisp, cool feel of lower thread counts of percale (200–300), while others prefer the dense, silky touch of higher counts of sateen (400–500). The trick is to know what you like.

  • Do you sleep hot? If you tend to overheat at night, opt for sheets with a thread count between 200–400. These will feel lightweight and breathable, helping you stay cool through the night. And you would want a Percale weave

  • Looking for durability? If you want sheets that last longer and can withstand frequent washing, go for a higher thread count (400–500) with single-ply yarn for extra strength without sacrificing softness. You would want a Sateen weave

  • Want that hotel-like luxury? If you’re after that ultra-smooth, silky hotel sheet feel, aim for 300–400 thread count in high-quality cotton like Egyptian or Pima. You’ll get a soft, plush experience without feeling too heavy. And almost exclusively use Percale woven textiles for top of bed across an entire property.,

How to Care for Your Sheets to Make Them Last Longer

Proper care can significantly extend the life of your sheets, keeping them soft and comfortable for years. Start by washing your sheets in cold or warm water with a mild detergent to prevent fading and fabric wear. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can break down fibers over time.

Tumble dry on low heat or line dry when possible to prevent shrinkage and preserve the fabric’s integrity. Ironing isn’t usually necessary, but if you prefer a crisp look, use a low-heat setting. Rotating between two or more sets of sheets also helps reduce wear and tear, giving each set time to rest between washes. With these simple steps, you can keep your sheets feeling fresh and cozy for the long haul.
